Online MeetUp no.6

  1. Hello Elena,
I just posted a comment on the blog of Orlando …

I wanted to get back to the beginning of the discussion about the number of Hi5 users, where Orlando feels that the figures we report are not right. I think we should see what we compare in terms of measurement and in terms of period. And if you look at it that way, we might both be right or at least less off in terms of numbers.

To be clear on our study, which had a fieldwork in JUNE 2009.

This is very important to take into account.

For Romania we had 2035 participants and depending on the countries our sample is representative for the online country population being 15yo+. Its representativeness is controlled by quota management on the number of Internet users, gender, age, language, Internet/e-commerce maturity and broadband penetration. Various offline sources and statistics were used for calibration: random dialling CATI interviews, Forrester research data and national statistics.

Based on the research we see that in Romania, among users of Social Networks sites, the group ‘other’ is very big, due to Hi5 not being listed. If we do the math we see that the actual number of users of Hi5 at that time (June 2009) will be around 1,7 mio for 15yo+ I’m sure the youngsters will add up to around 2 mio users in June 2009.

Here 15+yo is also an important one to take into account.

The figures are in line with what is available on different sites:

Aug 2009: ARBOinteractive: hi5.com has 2.251.606 active accounts in Romania
    http://www.core-target.ro/internet/1513/arbointeractive-hi5com-has-2251606-active-accounts-in-romania.html

    Oct 2009: … but Hi5 boasted 2.3M users in a country of 21M …
    http://www.socialnetworkingwatch.com/2009/10/social-networks-baffle-east-europe-media.html

    Jan 2010: … 2.6 mio Hi5 active users …
    http://www.slideshare.net/mihaicd/social-networking-facebook-hi5-twitter-linkedin-in-romania

I’m sure in the meanwhile they might have grown towards 3 mio or above but when comparing this number of users with the number of visitors I can only suggest to take into account the definition used.

I know that different measurement systems have different ways of counting and possibly they work on a browser count and not unique visitor count !! The research is indeed individual internet users.

I just wanted to point this out to underline the validity of the research project and we should consider different things when discussing about numbers.

Hope this clarifies and if anyone has questions sam @ insites . eu

    Regards, Sam.
